I don't know about basketball, but it pertains to rules about deception in football.

Like I said above, I am not sure of the exact basketball rule, but for football you will find it listed under Rule 9, Section 6, Article 4 partaining to Illegal Participation. Initial C & D states:

    It is illegal participation

C: to use a player, replaced player or substitute in a substitution or pretended substitution to deceive opponents at or immediately before the snap or free kick.

D: for a player to b3e lying on the ground to deceive opponents at or immediately before the snap or free kick.

    Re: Barking dog play

So it's not legal in basketball to do that play anymore?

I know a late game situation where if we're down 2 and have only 1 FT late in the game, the coach can start yelling to distract everyone while the player rifles the ball off the rim. The coach yells hoping to grab the attention of the opposing team lining up for the FT. Would that not be legal?

Could be consider an unsporting foul Rule 10.3.7
On a freethrow, it is a violation by Rule 9.1.5. No player shall disconcert a free thrower. Barking or yelling during a free throw is exactly that. Not to mention poor sportsmanship.

    Re: Barking dog play

Well technically, the way its described, you wouldn't be distracted the person attempting the free throws, you would be attempting to distract everybody else ...
What we've got here is failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach, so you get what we had here last week which is the way he wants it. Well, he gets it.
